Events Recap and Pics Coming Soon!
The Northwest Mississippi Championship was a new event for 2018. This event was hosted on two courses (Tunica National and Riverbend Links), the very same courses as the Web.Com Tour Qualifying event the following Monday.
Over 180 players came to Tunica MS to compete for the $30,000 first-place check. A close competition was expected. What was not expected was the un-seasonable winds and cool temperatures.
Round one was very cool and was close to being delayed due to frost. Scores were as expected with Ben Briscoe and Grady Brame Jr taking a share of the lead at (-7) 65. Forty-three players broke par during round one.
Round two gave the competitors an idea of how difficult the next two rounds would be. Winds began to blow around 9:30 and became consistent at 15-18 miles per hour throughout the day. Scores rose with the winds. Only 20 players broke par in round two. Yet Derek Barron and William Kropp managed bogey-free 66’s to climb to the top of the leaderboard.
Round three was tough from the opening tee shot. Winds picked up to 18-20 mph with gusts up to 30. Most players had to back off putts and full shots several times due to the gusting winds. Again, only 14 players managed to break par. This included Altos CA, Edward Olsen. Olson managed to go bogey-free and made 7 birdies en route to his amazing (-7) 65.
Heavy rains came Friday night and Saturday morning, forcing the delay and eventual cancellation of round 4 of the tournament. The delay went 12:30 pm, when Tour officials deemed the course unfit for the start of the round.
Many thanks go out to Tunica National and River Bend Links for hosting this inaugural event. We look forward to returning again in 2019!
